History
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is one of the key academic departments of the Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi (FUAMB), established to support the University’s commitment to advancing agricultural innovation, food security, and sustainable natural resource management in Nigeria.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Mubi, Adamawa State, was officially established following the approval of its enabling bill by the National Assembly and the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari on 28th May 2023. The establishment of the University created a platform for specialized education, research, and innovation in agriculture and allied disciplines that are critical to national development.
Recognizing the growing importance of fisheries and aquaculture in addressing food insecurity, unemployment, and economic diversification, the Department was established to produce highly skilled graduates capable of transforming Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture sector through modern technologies, research, and entrepreneurship. Since its inception, the Department has focused on developing competent professionals equipped to contribute to sustainable aquatic resource management, fish production, and innovation-driven aquaculture practices.
Overview
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is dedicated to developing and integrating innovation in teaching, research, and emerging technologies within the fisheries and aquaculture industry. The Department provides students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in fisheries science, aquaculture production, aquatic ecosystem management, fish breeding, nutrition, aquaponics, hydroponics, aquatic biotechnology, and sustainable aquatic resource utilization.
Through modern teaching methods, hands-on training, research, and industry engagement, the Department prepares graduates to address challenges relating to food and nutrition security, fish production, environmental sustainability, and economic development. The Department adopts contemporary technologies and best practices that facilitate learning, research, and innovation while empowering students with entrepreneurial and technical competencies required for sustainable development.
The Department also promotes interdisciplinary research and community-based initiatives aimed at improving fish production systems, enhancing livelihoods, conserving aquatic ecosystems, and supporting Nigeria’s blue economy.
