Department of Geography
History
The Department of Geography was established to study the Earth, its physical features, human populations, and the interactions between people and their environment. Geography has evolved from traditional map-making and exploration into a modern scientific discipline that uses advanced technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to solve environmental and developmental challenges.
The Department of Geography is created to support sustainable agricultural development through research, teaching, and community service. The department contributes to land use planning, climate studies, environmental conservation, water resource management, and rural development, all of which are essential for food security and national development.
Overview
The Department of Geography is an academic unit dedicated to the study of the Earth’s physical environment, human activities, and the relationships between people and their surroundings. The department equips students with knowledge and practical skills to understand environmental challenges, population dynamics, urban and rural development, climate change, natural resource management, and the use of modern geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

To provide quality education, research, and community service in geography and geospatial sciences by producing competent graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills required to address environmental, agricultural, and socio-economic challenges for sustainable development.

To become a leading centre of excellence in geographical education, research, and innovation that promotes sustainable environmental management, agricultural development, and societal transformation at national and global levels.
Admission Requirement
- A minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB (in not more than two sittings). The required subjects must include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Obtain a minimum JAMB (UTME) score of 150 or above.
- Participate in and satisfy the University’s post-UTME/Screening Exercise.
Direct Entry Requirements
- Meet the minimum O’Level requirements.
- A National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or NCE in Geography or a related discipline.
